Born in Southampton but raised in Baltimore, it’s as if Joe Nice was destined to be Dubstep’s transatlantic evangelist. He was one of the first people in the US to notice Garage’s mutations at the end of the 20th century, then fully absorbed it into his artform with the launch of GourmetBeats and Dub War, the first independent radio and first party in the US focused on Dubstep music. But he was never just and American DJ who happened to play Dubstep - he was one of the genre’s best selectors who happened to be on the other side of the pond (he was, also, the first US-based DJ to play FWD>> and DMZ). He delivers a masterclass in no-frills, fluid bass energy drawing from obscure white-labels released yesterday (some on his GourmetBeats label) to rare classics on wax. It’s a bass experience that has to be experienced to be believed.
